Trumplandia May Sweeps Do Not Disappoint

Season finales have traditionally dominated television programming during the merry month of May:  cliff hangers abound; plot twists rule; buildings explode; cars crash and usually, a major character dies at the hand of a rising villain.   May sweeps for Trumplandia–America’s own really real reality show–packed in so much drama this month, viewers need a bullet point list to keep up.

On May 9, Trump fired FBI Ditector James Comey; the very next day, Trump met with two VIRs (Very Important Russians): Ambassador Kislyak and Foreign Minister Lavrov, shutting all U.S media out, allowing only a Russian State photographer to take pictures.  These two events have produced a gushing river of leaks and revelations as follows:

  • May 10 – During VIR meeting Trump, in a boast about the “great intel” he gets every day allegedly disclosed the location city of a covert Israeli operative to the Russians. (1)
  • Also during that same May 10 Oval Office Troika, Trump proclaimed to the VIRs, “I just fired the head of the FBI.  He was crazy, a real nut job.” Trump then admitted to the VIRs, “I faced great pressure because of Russia.  That’s taken off.” (2)
  • May 11–In an interview with Lester Holt, Trump himself made the connection between Comey’s firing and the Russian investigation, saying on live television:

“But regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey knowing there was no good time to do it. And in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself — I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story. It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.” (3)

  • Also on May 11, NYTimes reported that Trump had asked Comey to pledge loyalty to him at a January dinner. (4)
  • May 12–Trump tweeted: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”((4)
  • May 15–The Washington Post broke the story about Trump’s blabbing classified info to VIRs during that May 10 meeting and #Blabbergate is born. (4)
  • May 16–News of a memo written by Comey, detailing a February 14 meeting with Trump–the day after Mike Flynn was fired–falls into the hands of NYTimes revealing that Trump asked of Comey, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go.” (4)
  • May 17–Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appoints former FBI Director Robert Meuller as special counsel to investigate Trump/Russia connection. (4)
  • May 18–Trump whines all day on Twitter and to the public about how persecuted he is: “I believe it hurts our country terribly, because it shows we’re a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country,” calling the appointment of a special counsel, “a very, very negative thing.” (4)
  • May 19–White House document detailing the May 10 meeting is read to the NYTimes revealing the “nut job” comment. (4)
  • Also on May 19–CNN reports that a senior White House official close to Trump has been named as a “significant person of interest” in the Russia investigation. (4)
  • May 22–Washington Post reported Trump asked National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers and Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats to publically deny evidence connecting Trump Campaign and Russia. (5)
  • Also on May 22–Fired National Security Advisor Michael Flynn officially refuses to comply with a senatorial subpoena regarding Russia investigation.  Flynn will reportedly “take the Fifth.” (5)
  • Also on May 22 Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) announced that his Oversight Committee possesses a document proving that Flynn lied about being in the pay of Russian entities in his March 14, 2016 security clearance interview. (5)

Although there are are many more SNAFUs and Twitter rants not listed above, these are the main events in the Trumplandia May sweeps.

Meanwhile, back under the Capitol dome, while We, the People focus our attention on the drama of Trumplandia, the Republicans in Congress are robbing the poor to give to the rich with every bill they pen, be it budget, healthcare or tax reform.  Between Trump’s ghastly racist, misogynistic executive orders and the Republican’s blatant disregard for the will of the majority of people in this nation, America will be unrecognizable well before the 2018 midterm elections.  Impeaching Trump will be an entertaining season finale for Trumplandia but the show will continue as Pencelandia in the fall.
